No, this is homework!

I Promise. This really is homework.

It amazes me how many different products are available to help you remember A&P, Flash cards, coloring books, videos, and iTunes university lectures, even with all of those options there is one key item you can not buy at your universities book store. Motivation. Anatomy is a class, that you need a lot of motivation to learn, it's not something you can pick up and pass just by attending lecture.

Nearly everyone in my class is going into some sort of healthcare profession, yet over half the class can not seem to pull it together and score above a 60 on the exams. I don't think I want these people near me in a healthcare capacity.

  1. Your new calling is to help your fellow students. Give them a motivational pep talk and see if it works.

  2. I was amazed at the lack of knowledge in my A&P classes. Granted, I had a bit of an advantage, having a previous degree that was very anatomy-heavy (although it was animal anatomy...but some things are quite similar across species)...but still! Several classmates consistently failed exams, missing things that seemed very basic to me.

And like in your case, many of these were pre-nursing students. After having been in the real nursing program for 5-6 weeks, I really wonder how those students will make it if they can't even grasp simple concepts in A&P..? Yikes.

  3. I had the same experiences in my A&P classes. In both of my A&P classes, less than half the students were still there by the end, and I saw quite a few repeating the next semester.

You are absolutely right. You can buy all the tools in the world to help you learn but if you aren't motivated to use them, they are worthless.

  4. In nursing school we lost half of the students enrolled from the beginning.
It will work out, those who want to be there and those who don't.

But, we all have weak classes where we under perform over the years due to personal problems, conflicts and other issues, so don't be too hard.

  5. Same experience here. A&P was a major weed out. It still surprises me how little people remember of their anatomy and how helpful it is in actual practice. So many concepts make perfect sense when you own the underlying anatomy and physiology.

  6. Zazzy: I've tried!

Kendra: I notice a lack of knowledge, and a horrible inability to pronounce words from the text. I mean come on, have you never watched ER, House etc, you've atleast HEARD some of these words, lol.

NP_Odyssey: I totally agree that we all have weak classes, I'm very supportive in person of those that are actually trying and not getting it, I just don't appreciate those that obviously aren't even trying.

NurseXY: I've read your blog, and see the background that you have, I hope to one day be as knowledgeable as you already are fresh out of nursing school, :)

  7. I noticed this as well. Most of my class is pre-nursing. This other lady and I are the only dental hygienists. So many people skipped our first test. When I asked a girl why she skipped, she told me she was tired and didn't want to go to class that day.

    What is wrong with people!

  8. I think a lot of the apathy for class has to do with age. I obviously wasn't ready for college at 20, so here I am at 32 going back to college. It could be that those that aren't studying just don't really want to be there, and are just doing it to appease parents.
